About

About

Established in 1994, the original business plan for CMA was to offer professional hydraulic engineering services to clients with a need for upgraded or new equipment, and for complex problem solving. Offering an engineering solution as opposed to product supply approach to our customers is still a fundamental part of the CMA ethos.

CMA is a team of highly experienced professional engineers and technicians with a long history of completing successful projects. Our in-house capabilities include the hydraulic, mechanical, electrical and software design components of our projects, along with overall management, installation and commissioning. We apply an innovative design approach, that for many years has resulted in hydraulic and control systems that offer lower energy consumption, higher reliability, and ease of maintenance when compared with conventional system designs. We excel with complex, technically challenging equipment where a high level of integration between mechanical and electrical hardware, and software is required.

CMA operates over all industry sectors where Fluid-power equipment is required including mining, manufacturing, mobile equipment, material handling, material testing and entertainment.

Our History

1994 – 1996

CMA commences business with 2 engineers and a design draftsman. Work is primarily new hydraulic systems and upgrades for a range of medium and heavy manufacturing businesses. Start developing motion-control (electronic feedback control) system expertise predominantly with analog electronics.

1997 – 1998

CMA undertook two very large projects that provided us with the opportunity to develop a mechanical design component of the business, including FEA (Finite Element Analysis) capability. The combination of offering both traditional mechanical and electrical engineering design disciplines allowed us to confidently complete high complexity projects that required careful interaction between motion control electronics, and the hydraulic and mechanical equipment being controlled.

1997

In response to demand from our customers for ongoing service of hydraulic equipment, we developed a test and repair facility for hydraulic proportional and servo valves. For over 20 years CMA has been testing and repairing over 300 hydraulic servo and proportional valves per year, of all brands and types.

1999

Having identified a market need for a locally developed and supported real-time motion controller, CMA commenced development of our own device, culminating in release of ‘FATController’ in 2002. Over the next 10 years well over 100 of these highly-functioning, multi-axis, real-time digital motion controllers would be manufactured and installed in manufacturing plants all around Australia and in several overseas countries. Some are still in use today.

2002

CMA recognised a market need for a test and repair service for process and cryogenic (gas-control) valves, operated with a similar focus on professional and quality service as our hydraulic servo valve repair business. Following significant investment and effort to design and build a range of facilities, CMA developed the capability to test, repair and clean cryogenic/ process control valves to the highest standards as required by some of our customers. A significant part of this capability is our hydro-carbon cleaning and certification service for valves and components that work with Oxygen gas.

2003

CMA agrees to represent Bosch-Rexroth Australia as their Illawarra distributor for hydraulic, pneumatic, and linear motion product ranges. This direct access to Bosch-Rexroth’s excellent range of products further enhanced CMA’s ability to offer a complete design/ supply/ install solution to our clients.

2011/2012

CMA appointed as the authorised Young & Franklin Inc. Repair and Overhaul facility for Australia covering a wide range of fuel and engine control valves used on gas turbines. This appointment required extensive technical and product training at Y&F’s facility in Syracuse, New York resulting in CMA being the only company in Australia and New Zealand certified by Y&F to test and repair their product. In 2012 the partnership was enhanced with CMA being appointed the Australian distributor for sales of new Y&F product.

2012

CMA enters a partnership with Delta Computer Systems in Washington USA to become the sole Australian distributor and system integrator for the excellent range of Delta Motion Controllers. RMC controllers are generally acknowledged to be the best hydraulic servo controllers worldwide, used in a vast range of applications and by many manufacturing equipment OEMs in industries such as timber, material testing and steel.

2013

CMA appointed as the Australian distributor and repair facility for Star Servo Valves. Star manufacture a complete range of mechanical and electrical feedback servo valves for a wide range of applications and industries worldwide.

CMA Perth established a to service the growing WA business in LNG, Power Generation and mining services.

2014

Merged with CRAM Fluid Power to produce the Cram/CMA Group with a workforce of over 150 people with facilities in Mackay, Newcastle, Perth and Unanderra (Wollongong).

2016

The Specialised Maintenance Services (SMS) division is developed, operating out of a separate fabrication workshop and providing site service labour for shutdown and project work to a range of industrial clients.

2019

The Cram group is purchased by Motion Australia to spearhead their growth into the Australian hydraulic market. The Cram and CMA businesses continue to operate as before, with CMA continuing its offering of engineered solutions and specialised valve service and repairs.
